What Is an Interior Drainage System?
An interior drainage system — often called an interior French drain — is the most reliable way to keep a basement permanently dry. A drain channel is installed around the inside perimeter of your basement floor, just below the slab. When groundwater rises, it flows into the channel instead of seeping across your floor, and is carried to a sump pump that moves it safely out of the house.
It works even when the water table is high, the soil outside is saturated, or the rain keeps coming. No digging around the outside of your foundation, no torn-up landscaping — the entire system goes in from inside your basement.
How It Works
Step 1 — Break the perimeter. We cut a narrow trench around the inside edge of the basement floor, down to the footing.
Step 2 — Install the drain channel. Perforated drain pipe is set in washed stone along the footing, pitched to carry water toward the sump basin. This gives groundwater a path of least resistance — into the pipe, not onto your floor.
Step 3 — Sump pump connection. The channel drains into a sealed sump basin with a high-capacity pump, which discharges the water well away from your foundation.
Step 4 — Restore the floor. The trench is re-cemented, leaving a clean, level floor with only a barely noticeable seam around the perimeter.
Most installations are completed in one to two days, and you can use your basement throughout the process.
